I have asked each one of my kids, "What is the one thing you want to do before school starts back up?" and they have all said, "Nothing." Done and done. But seriously folks, I'm not telling you this to suggest that we have had such an awesome, event-filled summer that my kids can't even think of one more thing they want to do. It's also not that my kids are boring. They do stuff pretty much all day, every day, outside with their friends. I've been experimenting from year to year with more and less planning over the summer. But I've found that as my kids get older the structure starts getting filled in for you with scouts, lawn-mowing jobs, achievement days, and actual interests that my kids just want to pursue on their own.
So this summer I introduced a minimum of structure. Every Tuesday and Thursday we go to a movie at the Scera. We do "cleaning crew" Wednesday night. We also go to the library every week. I'm not going to lie to you. Sometimes the kids stay in the car while I get books for myself. We have meals together mostly but the kids have had lots of "late nights" with their friends and Sam enjoys riding his bike along the river trail to Macys to get hot wings with his friends. So sometimes he's not hungry.
Here's a sampling of the kinds of things the kids come up with on their own:
One day I went outside and Sam's friend had brought over his riding mower and they were driving it over a dirt hill and down the ravine in the empty lot next to our house. Boys will be boys! (Which is to say, boys will be reckless ding dongs.)
One day Maggie and her friend invented the game, "Here You Go" for Ellen.
And every day Ben comes home soaking wet from head to toe, smelling of pond water.
So, yeah. They stay busy. But not too busy. You have to make sure your kids are bored right before school starts so they are excited to go back. It's not as easy as it sounds. You have to swallow your pride, big time. Every year regardless of what we have done over the summer--camping, trips, museums, once my kids went on a freaking dinosaur dig with archeologists from BYU for pete's sake--they always say that they did "nothing" over their summer break in that essay on the first day of school. Sometimes they do me the ultimate injustice of writing that they "watched TV all summer." That's when I decided Kindermusik probably wasn't worth the hassle.
And so, with one week left before school starts, I feel no pressure to make my kids' dreams come true because all they want to do is nothing. So that's what we're doing. It's going to make getting up and walking to the bus stop so exciting!
PS: Speaking of exciting, the $100 Visa Gift Card Give Away continues this week from 8/17/10 through 8/23/10. There will be another winner this week so leave a comment to enter. Comment on these posts for more chances to win.

Yeah. We spent this weekend 1) painting (and I HATE cleaning up paint crap) 2) going to the Hill Airforce Base Museum, and 3) going swimming at the beach at Pineview Resevoir.
ReplyDeleteAnd last night my five year old asked me why we "never do anything fun."
I'm taking a page from your book Kacy. Definitely.
ha ha ha, I love it!
ReplyDeleteMy older kids start school tomorrow, and as it was my first summer as a SAHM, we chose to do as few scheduled activities as possible. Even though we vacationed a bunch out of town as well, some of our best days were just spent staying at home.
Thank you for being such an honest parent. So refreshing.
I've always been passionate about cereal. And gift cards. How cool would it be if Ellen was all "Here you go!" with a Visa Gift Card? Very cool.
ReplyDeleteIf I had a $100 gift card I would use it to buy more shea-infused lounge socks which I wear everyday of the summer during my nap. And maybe more DVDs for Peter to watch during my nap.
ReplyDeleteToday I tried to take my kids to the splash park as our final fling before school starts next week. They sat next to me whining and saying they just wanted snacks. If I had $100 gift card I wouldn't spend any of it on them. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteNot even going to PRETEND that I'm going to go to any effort to make "their last week of summer" thrilling - just going to do my BEST to SURVIVE it without killing any of them! Just sayin'........and I feel that keeping all SIX of my children alive this ENTIRE summer pretty much deserves some sort of reward, don't you? ;)
ReplyDeleteMmmm, pond water. Love that smell. Would also love to win the giftcard.
ReplyDeleteYou are an inspiration to every mother. And I can't wait for the day when my little boy comes home smelling of pond water. Delightful.
ReplyDeleteI need me some money! Haha. My kids aren't in school yet, so I can't relate. But I DO want to win! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteA little bit of nothing sounds good to me! Maybe I'll do some of that myself, after I've made dinner, cleaned up dinner, gone to the store, done a load of laundry... or maybe not.
ReplyDeleteI bet I could come up with a whole lot of the right kind of nothing to do with that gift card, though! Jussayinisall.
We too are not doing much of anything this last week before school starts. But if I win that gift card I'll be doing a whole lot of shopping.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are lounging around right now, and would probably also say they watched TV all summer as well. I would love to win the gift card too!
ReplyDeleteMoms need to relax in the summer, too. We can't let the kids have all the fun. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi. I would like a gift card.
ReplyDeleteI have been working at Blayne's office so my kids have watched TV all summer long... I don't feel bad
ReplyDeleteI am a teacher so my summer is officially over. The teachers started back yesterday. :( Our last-minute adventure was to head down to San Antonio for the weekend and go to Sea World. It was a blast!
ReplyDeleteannie@thepurcell.com
doing nothing sounds good :D the heat makes want to sleep all day. i've been stuffing myself with cherries and melons too.

Summer fun at the beach is the plan for the family! With a $100.00 gift card it would be fun just to let the kids do what they want.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, Kacy. Also, I love breakfast cereal.
ReplyDeleteWe took a our kids on their first beach vacation. It was GREAT!!!:)

To end the summer we look forward to getting together with a few other families for a BBQ - good food, good friends, good fun!
ReplyDeleteSince my daughter is not yet in school, summer has been like winter, only slightly warmer (actually for London it's been fairly warm). As for cereal, I love it and wish I had more US selections here. We do get cornflakes though, so that's nice.
ReplyDeleteHere's to the last few uneventful weeks of summer!
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad school had started. Now I can sit in my robe and read the internet (for like, 10 minutes, before the baby gets up), instead of being harrassed into swimming and libraries and indoor nerf wars and so forth. If I send the kids outside, they just come right back inside. It is 110 degrees out there!
ReplyDeletewe didn't do much this summer either and it was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWe are chillin' in our swim suits, eatin' cereal until our last hurrah in...wait for it...PROVO (I know you want to hang out with me, KC, and I will be in your hood hangin' with Bucherts, so say the word)on the 26th-29th. Then it's SCHOOL on the 31st. I love the Here You Go game, especially the operatic singing part.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah...I need that gift card for my PROVO TRIP!
ReplyDeleteIf I win the $100 gift card I will restock my 72 hour kits... which consist primarily of cereal.
ReplyDeleteNothing? Done. And Done. Now I feel totally justified for not enrolling Phoebe in that French Summer class. Thanks for that--As you know, I need consistent validation.
ReplyDeletepond water and dirty boy head is always a great combination...
ReplyDeleteI feel very inadequate as a mother when my kids bring home school assignments referencing how much time they spend playing video games, or how much they love playing their DSI.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I also plan to do nothing. And I couldn't be more thrilled!
ReplyDeletechelsea at rootsandrings dot com
My favorite is combating the I'm Boreds with a list of chores they can do! And then they grumble, go away to entertain themselves, and I have to do the chores anyway.
ReplyDeletethankfully a couple of trips to Naples where my MIL lives makes it easy to visit the beach.
ReplyDeleteThat is totally what I'm missing. Swallowing my pride and making the last bit of summer as boring as possible so school will sound fun! Another useful tip. Thanks! Yesterday my backyard was full of at least a dozen neighbor kids and throughout the day I heard "this is the best day ever!" alternating with "I'm so bored, there's nothing to do" from all the SAME kids. You just can't win. And here in Seattle, we don't go back to school until Sept 7th!
ReplyDeleteWe've had a blissfully laid back summer. Camping here and there, an amusement park, a movie or two. And a lot of just hanging out together. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that I'm 19% cereal.
ReplyDeleteThis summer has been kinda blah around here. We went camping once and the water parks a lot, but other than that we didn't do much!
ReplyDeleteThe last few weeks will probably be about the same lol!

ReplyDeleteI have wanted to take the kids to the zoo all summer but haven't made it yet!

ReplyDeleteI would of loved taking my kids to a Cottage on the lake for a week but that has not happened yet! Boo Hoo!

wow, wish my kids lived by your kids, which shouldn't be too far away. we've been to the scera every wednesday.seems like your kids have made the most of their summer!
ReplyDeletecolette@tervort.com
The kids start school Monday so we are already in our flurry of back to school supplies; grandkids meet their new teachers and see their new rooms on Friday; we wind up GP (Grandparent) camp Thursday so we can help give out school supplies at the Friday open house…
ReplyDeleteI also want to just relax.
ReplyDeleteYOUR LITTLE GIRL IS BEAUTIFUL! I TRIPLE JUST WANNA RELAX. SEEMS LIKE I'VE BEEN RUNNING AROUND ALL SUMMER! kytah00@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI just finished school myself (after 9 years!) so I feel like my summer is just starting! Oh well.
ReplyDeleteHaha I agree with you. The last week before school my daughter just wanted to watch tv, play and play wii games which was fine by me and since she's gone for so many hours at school it was nice to just hang out. Like ya said get them bored so school will be exciting haha.
ReplyDeletedisintegratingstarr@hotmail.com
I love nothing. We've done nothing all summer too. And I loved every minute!
ReplyDeleteI'm sad summer is ending.
ReplyDeletehewella1 at gmail dot com
I have decided that my having a baby is the ultimate summer killer for our older kids. They are definitely ready to go back to school so that they actually get to leave the house sometimes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this giveaway! My last-days-of-summer plans are just to take an extra 2 days off from work, go swimming, and relax as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteThat is my new favorite game. It will totally annoy Jooj, which, according to her, is what I have been doing all summer.
ReplyDeletethanks for the chance, great giveaway
ReplyDeletenannypanpan at sbcglobal.net
We already had our major events of the summer so we are enjoying the rest of the beautiful weather and time with family :) And lots of local parks too!
ReplyDeletepittsy82@hotmail.com
I wish school started mid-September rather than next week because I would love to take a trip to the beach for a week or so. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteparodi821 at yahoo dot com
P.S. Totally cracking up re: your comment about your kids essays :-)
My kids were also pretty busy this summer and i think are secretly excited to go back to school. I wasn't as structured as you, and I think they need that structure they get from the daily schedule of going to school
ReplyDeleteWe love summer and love doing anything outside. We will spend our last days of summer hiking, swimming, camping and just having fun!
ReplyDeleteI am preggie and cereal makes me puke but I would love a hundred bucks anyway!! Normally not a cereal hater, mb in ga
ReplyDeleteI agree , school starts very soon. I'll be going back to university in 3 weeks. (tears)
ReplyDeleteakahenry@live.com
Hi. So, all my kids have been served for dinner - by yours truly:) - all summer is...wait for it....cereal.
ReplyDeleteIf I win, it will get eaten.
Doing nothing is the best thing about summer!
ReplyDeleteWe have a pool that got a lot of use this summer.
ReplyDeletedlhaley(AT)hotmail(DOT)com
We are fitting in a trip to the zoo tomorrow. We will also fit in a few more trips to the city pool before it closes until next summer. We definitely will be spending time outside, since we are stuck inside for 4 long months of winter!
ReplyDeletenbalogh522 at gmail dot com
We aren't doing anything big- school shopping this weekend and hoping we can spend some quality lazy family time together this next week :)
ReplyDeleteThanks

We are going to squeeze in one more trip to the beach and a pseudo camping trip, camp fire, smores, ect but no staying the night. We have a newborn.
ReplyDeletemommycreations(at)gmail.com
Well, school starts Monday and we met the girls' teachers last night so I feel like summer is over! They have their last day of camp today and a pool party tonight and we'll just chill over the weekend. They're ready to go back to school!
ReplyDeleteWe plan to have a state fair trip and more bike rides before summer ends.
ReplyDeleteFun! I plan on going to the lake with my family and friends.
ReplyDeletelynnx512 at gmail dot com
We are going to camp out in the backyard and roast marshmellows over Labor Day Weekend for one last fling before school starts.
ReplyDeleteavennett AT verizon DOT net
Went to Unity Music Festival last weekend. Now we're just trying to get the most use possible out of our swimming pool. Love taking it easy at home.
ReplyDeleteWe are definetely going camping one last time this summer before going back to school!!! $100.00 would help out so much to get some stuff for my son before he goes back to school!!
ReplyDeleteI plan on taking my kids to the park this weekend, but just to get them out of the house so they stop fighting! School starts Tuesday, and I think we're all looking forward to having some routine back in our lives after a relaxing summer!!
ReplyDeletewinnieayala at yahoo dot com
Yay! Love summer smells and sights. scg00387 at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteWe have a fun camping trip planned with some friends we didn't get to see much this summer. And I try to hit the park and the beach with the kids as much as I can!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why I try. I'm probably one of the most unlucky people around!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to spend the last days of summer relaxing in the sunshine with a good book and a cold beverage... and BBQ.... if someone else does the cooking and clean up!
ReplyDeleteadrianecoros(at)gmail(dot)com
I am heading down south to an outdoor concert and then hopefully get to spend a day outdoors at a lake or pool.
ReplyDeleteWE're ready for summer to end - just because the Texas heat is so overwhelming each day! I wish school had longer breaks in the fall or winter - so we could enjoy the outdoors more!
ReplyDeleteSince fall is my favorite time of year I am actually looking forward to the end of the heat of summer. The $100 GC is a great prize and would come in so handy now.
ReplyDeleteWe are going to Boston to visit the kid's Nana. We will hit some historical sites.
ReplyDeleteWe had a wonderful summer! We spent several weeks at the lake enjoying jet skiing, wakeboarding and swimming. School starts on Monday, so we might go to a movie this weekend. It is just too hot to do anything outdoors!
ReplyDeletejedoggett@embarqmail.com
We are going to try to get to the beach this weekend, and have a cook out with ice cream sundaes for dessert.
ReplyDeleteWe have one more day trip to Old Orchard Beach Maine planned our end of the summer finale
ReplyDeleteWe are going to try and head to Enchanted Rock state park tomorrow for one last hike. Can't believe they start school on Monday.

ReplyDeleteWe went to the beach today and got rained out!
ReplyDeletein these last weeks we are visiting the grandparents
ReplyDeleteWe dont' have any definate plans for the rest of the summer. Maybe a couple more trips to the drive-in theater on weekend nights or a trip to an area National Park.
ReplyDeleteSummertime is meant for relaxing :)
ReplyDeleteiamcernetic AT gmail DOT com
Oh, our favorite thing for Summer is hanging out in the pool and playing in the water. I hope we can still do this for a few more weeks before the water gets too cold...
ReplyDeleteWe ended our Summer by visiting the animal sanctuary that's a few miles away. It was delightful to be able to see, pet, and feed all the animals! I hope we can go back sometime.
ReplyDeleteThat stinks when kids say, "we didn't do anything". Have a conversation the night before and say "let's remember what we did this summer". Maybe they'll remember it the next day. Maybe not, hmm.
ReplyDeletethanks for the entry! we're planning one last trip to the beach and labor day bbq to round up the summer :)

ReplyDeleteMy girls are the same way I ask them what they want to do and they say watch tv or nothing. We did luckily get out to the park a few times and went on walks. My husband returned to work after being out for almost 2 years with a back injury so it was hard readjusting to being all by myself with 2 walkers and an infant. I'd love to win the card so that we can use it towards Xmas shopping since all the money my husband is making goes towards bills and back due stuff.
