I Hate to Get Up in the Morning

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

I hate to get up in the morning. I don't think I've ever awakened naturally and happily. When I was little I had an alarm clock that was shaped like a cartoon lion in a cage, like at a carnival. It seems like a rather charming way to wake up. And yet, some of my earliest memories are of my adversarial relationship with that clock radio. I resented it when it went off in the morning and reasoned that it had a "head start" because I set it before I had gone to bed. I deserved two snoozes, I reasoned.

Not much has changed. Except now it's my kids who wake me up. Every night I go to bed thinking that I'll get up before the kids, exercise, make pancakes and wake them with the smell of maple syrup or bacon. Every morning I change my mind and sleep in until the last minute. I know. It seems really lazy and rude. It just takes me a while to wake up and when I do wake up it takes me a while to snap out of what I guess is my natural negative state. I'm working on it. I think it's called "cheerfulness." Or whatever.

What makes it worse is feeling guilty about it. So I've let it go. I need to focus my efforts. I mean, a delicious home-cooked breakfast every morning would be great for my kids. I'm sure they would like it and I admire people who do it. But is my purpose to make them feel like they live in a fancy hotel where breakfast is provided? No. It is not. So they learn to make cereal. I have milk delivered from the dairy in half-gallons which are easier for my kids to pour when mama's too tired to pour the milk. (Gallons are heavy! A gallon of milk is like 5lbs of something.) They also make toast, smoothies, and orange julius. They appreciate the occasional pancake or egg made by me and I want to keep it that way by not doing it very often.

Having said that, you might be surprised to hear that I am part of the Mom's Breakfast Club. I accept the fact that I'm not your typical mom. You see us how you want to see us, in the simplest terms and most convenient definitions. But what I've found is that each of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal who hates to get up in the morning.

Sincerely,
Mom's Breakfast Club

  1. Really, isn't teaching your children to be independent worth something:) - that's what I tell myself when I turn to the handy dandy stand-by of cereal in the morning.

  4. Kellogs Special K red berries with almond milk makes me feel a little less guilty about giving them cereal. Four days out of the week I make them something from scratch though.

  5. I think letting kids learn to make their own breakfast is good. :) A mom is so busy every day, kids should learn how to help her out in little ways. :)

  6. My husband likes a big breakfast on the weekends when we have more time. He cooks eggs with bacon or sausage, and makes his special oatmeal for our granddaugher.(She won't eat anything else!)

  8. Lol, I only wish my kiddos were big enough to get their own breakfast without destroying my kitchen! Most of the time, I make some eggs for them, but at least 2-3 days a week it's cereal all the way!
    Thanks!

  10. I work 2nd shift so I sometimes don't go to bed until almost 3am..it's almost impossible to get me out of bed in the morning and forget about using the stove; I'd set the house ablaze trying to cook breakfast...we're a huge cereal family, there's at least 4 boxes that sit on my counter and it's "you're on your own" for breakfast. My daughter sometimes tries to escape without eating and my job, as I sit on the couch in a stupor, is to yell "EAT SOMETHING before you leave this house".

  12. I can relate! I am not a morning person either. I set 2 alarms and still hit the snooze button a few times. Thank goodness for cereal for breakfast. It's something I can manage to "make" even before a cup of coffee.

  16. My two sons are completely different. One has to eat as soon as he gets up and the other needs to be awake for a while before he can eat breakfast. I let the little one eat a yogurt as soon as he gets up and then when the older one is ready, I’ll make them bowl of cereal, oatmeal, or a toasted English muffin. On the weekends, I try to do a nice family breakfast of pancakes or eggs and bacon.

  21. I am so not a morning person. My 2 little grandsons arrive at my house every weekday at 6:30 AM, as I am still trying to get my eyes to stay open. I feed both a bowl of cereal and toast and jelly usually before putting the 2 year old back to bed, and taking the 5 year old to school.

  24. I have never been a morning person either. I always sleep until the last minute. My daughter loves to have cereal for breakfast though, so I try not to feel guilty about not making something more extravagant in the mornings.

  26. I'm not much of one to eat breakfast early in the morning--I need to be up and have a few cups of coffee first! However, all the other members of my family eat breakfast every day. On weekdays, it is cereal (Kellogg's), PopTarts, or Eggos (they kind of have a sweet tooth)

  33. At the moment I have only one child, a six month old. But since getting pregnant with him breakfast has become essential for me! Now, we get up, fix breakfast and both of us sit down at the table to eat (though mine is more likely waffles or cereal and his is applesauce, but still a nice way to start the day).

  42. Every night I get into bed and set my alarm for ridiculously early. I have every intention of arising early in the morning to run, shower, and make breakfast all before my daughter and husband even think about waking up. But every morning, that offensive alarm clock starts blaring and it's all I can do to get up to pee. I then jump back in bed until 10am. Don't worry, my child sleeps 'til 11am since I'm a bad mom and let her stay awake until 11pm the night before.

    PS
I sure could use $100, I've got laundry detergent to buy since we're up to our neck in wet Dora panties. Potty training is overrated.

  45. yeah mornings are rough. Once I wake up, even if it's for a visit to the bathroom, that is it for me, no matter how tired I am. I turn the computer on and do stuff on it while still lying in bed. Funny, sometimes I will rest my eyes for a second, and half an hour later, I open them again!I guess computers are conducive to sleeping!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  50. Our typical morning routine is that I wake up first with the baby and make her and me oatmeal. THen our two older daughters wake up and make themselves Eggos and later my son and husband wake up last and have bowls of cereal. We never eat breakfast together but we always eat dinner as a family.

  51. I'm no morning breakfast-fixer either. We all fix our own breakfast, usually different brands of cereal for each. Hubby drinks coffee, I don't. But one thing I do is never buy the sugared cereal and sugar is not allowed to be poured on the cereal, just milk. My son likes cereal with no milk, just plain.

  52. When my son was little, I always kept yogurt (and plastic spoons), small boxes of cereal, juice boxes, string cheese, grapes, etc. in the veggie drawer of the fridge so he could help himself to breakfast if he got up before I did :) If I cooked, his favorite was (still is) oatmeal with grated apple in it, with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Now that he's older he's still a pretty good breakfast eater.

  53. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and if I could, I would gorge at breakfast and skip meals the rest of the day. I love to have eggs, bacon, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, the works! Not big on waffles or pancakes though. Typically though, I have a bowl of cold cereal

  54. i have often said if i had to eat only one food...section...for the rest of my life, it would be cereal. so much to choose from! i love standing in the cereal isle looking at all the neatly lined up boxes. gives me the chills. and yes, and i am one of those freaks who loves everything lined up just so. and vacuum lines.

    but cereal! yeah!
